From Buggies to Beacons

From 1780 to 1784, Sir Andrew Snape Hamond served as Resident Commissioner of the Navy and Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. He brought his wife Cecilia with him, and set up life on a northern ridge of the growing settlement. Hamond connected the farmlands north of the peninsula to the military bases of Halifax with a passage that became known as Lady Hammond Way. The buildings of Beacon Gate rise from the ridge of Lady Hammond Road, standing at the gateway to the city and signaling the growth of a social, vibrant North End.
